LIFE AS A PARENT

PARENTING     OPINION: Toxic parents hurt children           By ; Emmanuel Kiptoo Why are our parents so toxic? What do they gain from calling their children names and shaming them for making independent choices? Through the reels on TikTok, Facebook and Twitter, I came across posts that perfectly captured the strained relationships many young adults, especially women, have issues with their parents when it comes to moving out. For parents, a daughter moving out is often equated with irresponsibility, immorality or rebellion. Instead of taking it as an ideal reason or step towards adulthood, parents assume the worst. It is deeply frustrating how African parents impose their own insecurities and past regrets onto their children. Maybe they regret their own choices from when they were younger. The contrast between traditional African parenting and modern, Western parenting, which increasingly prioritizes emotional awareness, presents unique issues for Gen Z Africans who wish to reconcile these influences. African parenting styles often involve a hierarchical family structure, with an expectation of strict obedience. Discipline in many African families is rigorous, with physical punishment and firm reprimands common to enforce behavioral standards. Individuality and questioning au...

LIFE BEYOND

Are Our High School Graduates Ready for the Harsh Realities Beyond the School Gates?  By EMMANUEL KIPTOO    The excitement that marks the conclusion of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations is palpable across the country.    Students celebrate in varied, often dramatic, ways, from tearing up or burning their uniforms to hosting lavish parties. While such celebrations signify the end of an intense academic phase, they raise an important question: are these students prepared for the challenges that await them in the real world, particularly in Kenya’s current economic climate? For most of these students, life after high school represents freedom.     No more early morning preps, uniforms, or endless examinations. However, the romanticized notion of freedom soon meets the cold reality of adulthood. Kenya's economic situation, marked by high unemployment rates, soaring living costs, and stiff competition for limited opportun...
